I'm thinking about supplementing my income and going back to selling furniture for a short period of time. So, while I'm out on an interview, I notice this kid playing around with one of the store's inventory computers. He's about 13 years old, which in my opinion is old enough to know better. As he's pushing buttons on the keypad he turns to me and asks, "How do you get to the main screen?" Somehow seeking my approval to continue in his mischief. I said to him, "I don't know. I don't think it's intended to be played with." Thinking that the statement would be enough to deter a rational 13 year old from touching something that didn't belong to them.
Much to my amazement, this kid puffed out his chest and in the commandeering voice inflection reminiscent of some of my childhood friends said, "I ain't playing with you man." Now that I think of it, most of my young gangster friends are currently maladjusted or in some cases dead. I remember one friend who loved to fight. He was decapitated.
I couldn't believe it. I just sorta shook my head and quit talking to the kid. I've raised 3 well adjusted, fully functional and respectful young adults and the thought of some parent not teaching their children respect blows my top.
